Could Not Ask For a Better Place
My husband and I just returned from a Thanksgiving trip to St. John with both sets of parents. We had stayed in Coral Bay twice before and love the area. When looking for a place to stay, our requirements included: 1) a paved road to the house, 2) a great view and 3) bedrooms of equal size for each couple, allowing for privacy. The place met our needs and then some:
Location: The house is WAY on top, nearly the top, I'd say, of Bordeaux mountain. The road is paved to the house, and the driveway is big enough for two or three cars, though you will need some direction turning around in it. The wind blows at all hours of day and night keeping the place cool and free of mosquitoes, with no AC Needed.
Bedrooms: The house is built in pods, with each room very separate from the other. The main bedroom has a king-sized bed, the other two, queens. Each room has a bathroom which includes two sinks, a hair dryer, extra towels and a gorgeous stone shower looking out through screens over the famous view. The stone showers have a turret at the top they are not open-air. That was a good thing for me as Ive had way too many open-air shower/palmetto bug disasters at other places! Each room has a view the only real sunrise view is from the one with the king-sized bed. Each room also has a flat-screen TV, DVD player and luxurious bedding. The windows are not covered with blinds or curtains, but a screen is provided for privacy if necessary. We did not use what is described as the fourth bedroom thats definitely a kids room, with two daybeds that we could see.
Main Living Area: The main living room is as pictured and features an open-concept kitchen, living area and desk, and an outdoor dining porch with the world's greatest view.. We tried to have all of our meals on the fantastic porch, but on the few times when the rain was coming in sideways, we all fit around the bar just fine. This room has EVERYTHING every pot, pan, dish, bowl, utensil or spice you could want. It was absolutely the best stocked kitchen Ive ever rented we cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner and lacked for nothing when doing so. The refrigerator has an ice maker and the wine-glass chandelier is nice as well! Behind the kitchen area is a pile of about 12 beach chairs, all good quality. They also provide two hard-shell coolers to pack to bring to the beach as well. Downstairs was a fantastic high-efficiency washer/dryer we made use of on multiple occasions. The entire place is tiled and beautifully decorated. Theres nothing cheap or chintzy here!
The View: I could wax poetic about the view for hours. A few in our party had sailed the VI before and enjoyed mapping out old routes the view stretched to Virgin Gorda in the BVI and we spent many hours just staring. The sunrise, as mentioned, is best viewed from the master bedroom, though it may also be seen from the small 4th bedroom as well. The stars at night are manifold. Our usual routine was to wake, enjoy the view over breakfast, spend the morning at a beach, return to our villa by 3:00, relax, enjoy the view, cook dinner, enjoy the view while eating dinner. One day we skipped the beach, went to Skinny Legs for lunch and spent most of the day staring at the view. It was perfect.
The one thing we didnt use was the pool it was far too cold. This may be a good thing for people who visit in February, though. The bottom deck was a perfect location to practice some yoga, which we did on mats we found in one of the rooms. Did I mention how fantastically stocked the place is?
Were very glad to have found Windspree and recommend them highly. We had only tiny concerns (rental car issues, broken power outlet, coffee maker didnt work but there were two more) and Windspree offered quick resolution. We ordered our food and wine in advance from Starfish Market at Kays recommendation, and picked it up on the way. I highly recommend this. If you dont plan on going back to Cruz Bay after youre settled (and why would you?), its a great way to shop. We arrived at the house late Friday night in the dark, and waking up Saturday morning to find where we were was like waking up Christmas morning as little kids!
Beautiful and Remote
La Mer is a beautiful home. It is on Coral Bay, on the far side of the island. Way, way up on the top of a hill. The view is outstanding. The house is very interestingly constructed: it's three pods that are connected via patios. The showers are open air and gorgeous. The kitchen/great room is very welcoming and is a great place to cook. The home is perfect if you want to be on the quiet side of the island. There is a good variety of restaurants and markets nearby. It's great to have your own pool .
This was my third trip to the island and my first time staying in Coral Bay. I traveled with my family, a group of 8, ranging in age from 3-64. The accommodations were spectacular, better than expected and as nice as the pictures. The views were awesome, the place was set up wonderfully for a family group and would work equally well for friends with enough space for privacy and a great living and kitchen space for gathering. The kitchen has everything you need and more to cook for a large group. The road up to the house, not for the faint of heat, is quite steep. Highly recommend a 4 wheel drive!
This side of the island was very pleasant and I would recommend it to anyone who prefers the quieter side of town.
I do not recommend this property for the physically disabled. There are many stairs leading up to home and the property is set up on two levels
